Cremation Insurance Cost: How Much Coverage Do You Really Need?

September 21, 20265 min readBy James Johnson

Cremation is now chosen by more than half of American families, and it costs a fraction of what a traditional funeral costs. That means if you are planning for cremation, you may need less insurance, and pay a lower monthly premium, than you expect. Here is how to think about cremation insurance and how much coverage you really need.

How Much Does Cremation Actually Cost?

A direct cremation, which is cremation without a viewing or funeral service, typically costs between $1,500 and $3,500 depending on your area. A cremation with a memorial service runs closer to $3,000 to $6,000.

If you add an urn, a niche in a columbarium, or a reception, the total can reach $5,000 to $8,000. Even at the high end, cremation is still significantly less than a traditional funeral, which averages $8,000 to $10,000.

This is why cremation is such a smart financial choice for many families, and why the insurance to cover it can be very affordable.

How Much Cremation Insurance Do You Need?

If you are planning a simple direct cremation, $5,000 in coverage is usually more than enough. It covers the cremation itself plus a buffer for final bills, death certificates, and a small memorial.

If you want a cremation with a full memorial service, reception, and permanent urn placement, $7,000 to $10,000 gives your family comfortable room to handle everything without stress.

Many families also use cremation insurance to leave a small legacy, a few thousand dollars to a grandchild, church, or charity. In that case, $10,000 to $15,000 is a common target.

What Does Cremation Insurance Cost Per Month?

Because cremation coverage amounts are smaller, the monthly premiums are lower. A 60-year-old non-tobacco female might pay around $15 to $22 per month for $5,000 in coverage. A 65-year-old non-tobacco male might pay around $20 to $28 per month for the same amount.

For $7,000 in coverage, those same people might pay roughly $21 to $30 and $28 to $39 per month respectively. These are illustrative ranges based on real carrier rate tables.

The bottom line is that cremation insurance is one of the most affordable ways to make sure your family never faces a bill when you pass. For the cost of a streaming subscription, you can fully fund your end-of-life plans.

Cremation Insurance vs. Prepaid Cremation Plans

Some funeral homes offer prepaid cremation plans, where you pay for your cremation in advance directly to the funeral home. These can work, but they have drawbacks: the money is often tied to one funeral home, prices are locked at today's rates with no flexibility, and if you move, the plan may not transfer.

Final expense cremation insurance, by contrast, pays cash directly to your beneficiary, who can use it at any funeral home, anywhere. The benefit is portable, flexible, and your family keeps any money left over after the cremation is paid for.

For most families, the flexibility and portability of insurance makes it the better choice over a prepaid plan.
